Voicenote #18: Help, I’ve Rejoined The Wellness Girlies

A reluctant return to powders, potions, and probiotics.

I loved my season of rebellion: wine with friends, potato chips, skipping all the powders and potions. It felt good to roll my eyes at the “you’re never quite disciplined enough” wellness girlie culture.

But my energy has crashed, and suddenly (reluctantly) I’m back on the supplements, the shots, and the rituals I thought I’d left behind.

Follow along to learn what I’m adding and what I’m ditching.

Here’s what I’m trying

Transcript: Help, I’ve Rejoined The Wellness Girlies

Yeah, people ask me for recommendations all the time, and my response, in kind of a tongue in cheek, not serious, but kind of serious way, is, you may think I'm a wellness girly, but I'm really not.

And you know, this really comes from a place where wellness was like, you know, everything was wellness, and there were all these products, and it seemed like you could supplement your way, or you could gadget your way to health and happiness. And I did a bunch of those things for a while, and then I kind of just got over them. I was like, “What makes me happy is hanging out with my friends and drinking a glass of wine, and eating potato chips.”

And so I kind of revolted against the whole wellness girly thing, and went a bit far, probably in the other direction. Well, you know, I'm kind of embarrassed to say I'm back. I have had some stuff with my health that's been diagnosed recently, and I will go into that in another voicenote. But basically, what's happened is my energy has gone in the tanker, and I've had to actually really pay attention.

And I cannot be that carefree person who is like, I'm so healthy. I don't have to do any of these wellness girly things that everyone does, and I certainly don't have to put them on Instagram and pretend like, you know, I'm super disciplined about my disgusting green thing I drink every morning. But unfortunately, I’ve got to start focusing on my health and my energy.

And so this fall, I am adding back all the supplements, and I am cutting out alcohol, how freaking boring. And I am experimenting with getting rid of the grains and the gluten in my diet for a split second to see if it gives me more energy. And so, yeah, I'm back to doing all the things to try to get myself into a place where my body works again.

And so I joke with my friends, because I've just ordered, you know, I've ordered the supplements and the drops you put in the water, and I'm doing my ginger shot. And so I am building it back up again, and I'm going to be sharing all of those things with all of you.

But please, please, let's not pretend that if you're not doing these things, you're somehow doing it wrong. Because there are a lot of accounts out there, and there's a lot of products out there that will have you thinking, if you're not doing all of these things, you're somehow failing at wellness, where I'm of the very, very strong opinion that you can buy all the potions and do all the supplements, and if you are not in relationship with other people and being hugged and seen and known for who you are, and you have, don't have laughter in your life, And you don't have something you do that you love, and you don't have a little bit of compassion for yourself and give yourself a break, and you're not if you're criticizing yourself all the time, there is not a potion or a supplement in the world that can make you well.

So here's me being a wellness girly by not by choice, by necessity. And I mean no shade on, no shade on the wellness girlies, but I was enjoying being a little bit of a wellness rebel for a while, but I am back, and I'm going to be sharing all the stuff that I'm doing to try to make myself feel better, because I need it right now, and seeing what works, and asking you what works for you.

So please, please, if you have things that work really well for you, please share, because I'm trying a bunch of things, but nothing is better than someone else who's tried something, who said, “This is really effective, this has really worked for me.”

So if there are products or modalities or practitioners or practices that have felt great to you, please share them in the comments, and as always, thanks for listening.
